Compare and Contrast Native American and Settler Cultures
According to the novel, how are the two cultures the same? Different?

Native american and settler cultures are very different from eachother. The white settlers lived in brick or wood houses and they were very happy with it. While the Indians, they lived in the woods, in little huts, teepees, and they were also hapy with it because they loved the outdoors. They both ate different foods and dressed differently. but even though they both lived very differerntly they were both very happy with their style of living, because that's the way that they had been brought up, and that's what they were used to.

when u compare the native americans and the settlers u find many differences but u also find some similar...in the book "The Light In The Forest" the native americans and the settlers hated each other and they had different ways of life. the native americans had less cloths than the settlers.. the indians found that it is better to have less clothes and you wont feel like a heavie thing tied to the ground. the indians saw the settlers as people that stole thier land and killed them and were thier enemies. although the indians never kill the white people they like and aren't a hassle.. they treat thier prisoners well. they adopt the white prisoners to replace the ones they lost. the settlers kill the indians when they have them as prisioners or when they feel that they don't wanna deal with the indians. they feel as if the indians r savages and don't know the way of life and they r just horrible. the settlers are racest and think that just because the indians are a different color that they are horrible and then also they are becuase they live in the out side they don't taake bathes everyday and keep clean like they do and they feel as if they are just a nusance and want them gone and don't have to fear them all of the suden come apon them and attck them and scalp and take children.

the native americans and europeans are exact opposites.the way they are different is their behaviors and the way they react to situations.they are also very different in clothing accesories the way they live andwhat they beleive in.they also beleived in hating each others culture.

Native Americans and white settlers were very different in many different ways. One subject is their housing; white settlers live in the city with buildings that are brick and wood. Native americans live in teepees and wigwams. Another difference is their ways of life. The whites scalped and shot people. The native americans hunt for food, not just buy it at the store. Native americans also live in the forest and not in the city with the houses made of man-made materials. The indians lived in teepees made of buffalo hide and sticks.
the N.A. are very differnt from the settlers. each one has a differnt god they pray to. also their cloths and life sytes are differnt. you can see this in the story as a clash of culters. with the settlers haveing a eurcenter view and N.A. with their center view.

the settlers stay all locked up in there log houses,as true son said the first of his stayes in the settlers home.the indians stay out side. also the settlers,or atleast true sons biologicle mom,says "some" settlers are bad and some r good. also she said some indians were good,some bad.the indians believe all white r bad and all indians r good.

The Settlers and Native American had very differnet cultures. The settlers liked to lived in cleared areas where they could build towns. The Indians liked living in teppees or huts in the forest. The Indians liked to need to use the land to survive in the wild. Settlers liked to have other people do the job while they go to the store and buy what they need. True Son didn't like the settlers clothes. This is one example.

In the book the Native American relie on the land. While the European settlers look to worker to build houses or go into town to get food. Also, the Native Americans love being with family. This is also the same with the settlers. That both have differences and things that are a like.
native americans were kind of rude. they cannot do that.they cannot miisshandle the white people.like they did to truee son. atleast cuyloga was really rude to white people.
The differences between the settler's ways and the indian's ways is that the indians believe that everyone should live off the land! and they are very spirtual! The settlers belive that everyone should be formaly educated! and that they should all dress in "good" clothes!

To compare these two cultures,I would say they have many things in common,but in different ways.Such as religion.Although they are both religious,they have VERY different ways of looking at things in that catagory!
There are so many contrasts I could name.Instead,I will tell you the major differencs that popped out to me in this book.That would be the way they both live.Settlers like to stay inside and be surrounded by bricks and mattresses.Then,the Native Americans/Indians like to stay outdoors with their "motther earth" and their surroundings!
THE BOY TRUESON STATED THAT THE WHITE PEOPLE STAY LOCKED UP IN THE CONFINED LOG CABBINS AND BREATH STAIL AIR AS THEY LIVE INSIDE.he also stated that is why they are all pail and have white skin.

Compare and Contrast Native American and Settler Cultures
I believe that both cultures oppose eachother. They oppose eachother becase the Indians live off of the land and believe in many different kinds of spirits and/or gods. The whites beleive that there is one true god. However, they do both beleive that the ways that they live are right and the ways that the other group lives is wrong. An example from the story is in Chapter 8 on page 49 "They have their barns filled with grain for their pots when they need it. The Indian has none of these." That sentence proves two hings. One, that the Natives are reliant on the land and the second that they beleive the way they livce is right and the way the white live is wrong.

i think that the cultures are way different because the white settlers were spoiled they also think they are the best and that no one can beat them at anything. the indians really respected anything or anyone that would have talked to them nicely but the whites didn't even tink they were worth talking to and so the indians rebelled but the whites thought that they were savages were as it was the whites fault that the indians were acting up.

Native Americans live off the land by creating homes from wood and leaves. The settlers built roads and building using cement and blocks. Another contrast is the way they dress, indians wore clothing made out of bark and skin from animals. Most settlers wore clothing made out of cotton. True Son believes that what the settlers wear is very uncomfortable and constricting. A quote on page 41 "NOw he was thricce imprisoned-first in this alien land, then in this alien land, then in this Yengwe house and room and last in this white boy's clothing." Although through all these differences i found one similarity and this was that only the men went to battle and they both fought for what they believed in.

The similarities on the Native American Culture and the European culture is they both strive for independance within their own culture. They also both long for peace with their surrondings. Their differences are that they have different religions and ways of daily living. Such as the Native Americans believe that every being has a spirit or is a spirit. The Europeans believe in The One and Only God, Jesus Christ being God's son, and the Holy Spirit.
Native americans eat bear and fish and sleep on the ground. Settlers live in houses, eat wheat and beef, and sleep on beds. I think the indians lived a harder life. SHOUT OUT TO JSLSHFLH
The seetlers had better ctothes and the indains had only skins they carved.The indains were more peaceful and the seetlers were killing the land for their own personal gains. I think that if the indains weren't so differnt then the seetlers and wanted land for their own it would of been a bloody war between them. The outcome of this wouldn't be a good idea because both of them would lose many man that had wives and were the hunters for the family.Hunting is anther thing thats similar to each other, because they had to get their own food back then most of the time unless they were really rich and owned slaves or payed for it. Many people including me don't personaly care about what the differnces and the similarity between indains and seetlers,but i guess its good to know the history in our land or we will go through the same mistakes in our life.

I think all of my fellow classmates all have very very good opinions about this story.
I agree with most everyone who has posted. I think that Native Americans think that the settlers ways are not good and the settlers think that the native American's ways aren't good. Many people probably think that the Native Americans are less advanced than the settlers, but really they aren't. They figured out a way to use all of the animals that they kill. The settlers only use the fur and meat, though. The Native Americans also know how to hunt and make houses and stuff, and that is exactly what the settlers know how to do.

I think emilys comments were correct. the settlers had diffrent prioritys then the native ameriacans. The settlers care about money, birck houses, and being the richest person on there block. It is very very diffrent then the native americans. On the other hand the native americans didn't care about that stuff. All they cared about was nature, family, and religion. They didn't care about the material things they lived in a hut with not tv no music no nothing the had diffrent.

When you compare the native american culture and the settlers culture you see many differnt things about them. The Native Americans loved the nature and it was their religion. The Settlers though seemed like they didn't care about nature because they kept tearing it up. The Native Americans clothes were totally different from the settlers too. The Native Americans wore deer skins and hides of animals. The Settlers on the other hand wore cloth made into pantaloons and shirts and jackets for the boys. True Son said that they restricted him. Their shoes were also different. The native americans wore moccosins that were light, comfortable and water proof. The settlers wore shoes made out of wood so you clunked around. i think that there is one thing in common with the different cultures; they both want to protect their families.
But, all in all, the two cultures are totally different.

The native american live almost a care free life. What I mean is that they don't have to worry about money,etc. The settlers live were you need to pay the bills, buy homes to live in and buy food for there family. The native americans live in the woods along rivers and streams and in huts or teepes. The settlers live in towns where they can buy there needs they also live in brick houses to stay warmer. As for the indians they have to go out and hunt for food or build there own stuff. I agree with Emily Lootens ahe had a pretty good idea about this topic.
The settlers were very different than the native americans. Their cultures were near opposites. On one hand the settlers had no respect for nature, and on the other the indians lived completely off of nature and they worshiped animals as gods. The two are also different in the way they live, the indians lived in tepees and the settlers lived in large houses made of mud or stone.

These two cultures are entirely different. The native Americans live out doors and hunt their food themselves. They use anything they can to build their community without harming the wilderness. Whereas, the new Americans try to build houses with all of the resources they can, not caring about the new wilderness around them. They use up all the resources in one are then move to a new one to get larger. Although, they both have respect for their land, the natives have more.

i think that everybody had great ideas and each one was different. the indian culture is i think a better culture for who they are. but the settlers have a better culture if you really don't like to do anything. what i mean is that they had a more care free life which i like, but i think it would get boring after a while. as for the indian culture there is something new everyday and there would always be adventures.
